The Next Step

Sometimes you're faced with a choice that you know will hurt people.

But you have to make it anyways.

I've already made it, the only question for me now is how to go about telling people.

  1. I've learned that being assertive is key. For many years I struggled with understanding that concept because to me, I thought assertive consisted of having my nose in the air. But that's actually not the case at all. Using "I" statments is very beneficial. For example "I am doing this, because I feel..., I don't like this because it makes me ..." It's all in the delivery. Being assertive allows you to express honest feelings comfortably, and to exercise personal rights without denying the rights of others. There are 2 common emotions I have experienced being assertive and the first is guilt (that you may hurt someone's feelings, and fear (that you may be judged by those you care about). Sometimes we hurt people in our lives, it's inevitable. As long as we are honest and standing for our own values, it's all that matters. After all, WE have to put ourselves first always! Good luck :)
